Join the fight for birth justice

The U.S. has one of the worst maternal mortality rates in the world, and Black and Indigenous women are 2-3x more likely to die a pregnancy related death than white women. The Canary Film Project investigates and challenges the complex web of systems that create devastation where there should be joy and love. Our goal is to empower action by giving the public the information, resources, and direction needed to change the systems and policies that are turning families into statistics.

The Canary Film Project is more than a film: It’s a call to action. Our work is not to create viewers, but to create champions for reproductive justice. We all have the ability to push for change in the systems that produce negative—even lethal— outcomes for pregnant people, especially BIPOC. The situation is dire, but we are not powerless. Our goal is to awaken the public to our power to save lives by pushing for better policies.

Dominique is the Writer, Director, and Producer of Canary, a documentary about maternal mortality rates in the US, focusing on the communities most impacted: POC. This project was inspired by her own experiences and challenges with reproductive health as a Black woman in the US. A gifted storyteller, Dominique is not intimidated by the complexity of the interlocking systems that create injustice. She works to bring these systems to light and make people aware of what they can do to change things.
